Difference Between Traditional One-Piece Aluminium H Bar and Excelite Two-Piece Aluminium H Joiner
1. Sheet Thickness Compatibility
Traditional One-Piece Aluminium H Bar
-
Designed for a specific sheet thickness only.
-
Different profiles are required for different panel thicknesses.
Excelite Two-Piece Aluminium H Joiner
-
Suitable for a wide range of sheet thicknesses from 2mm to 16mm.
-
One joiner system can accommodate multiple panel types and thicknesses.
2. Ease of Installation
Traditional One-Piece Aluminium H Bar
- Installation can be time-consuming and difficult.
- Designed for Twinwall Polycarbonate sheet only
- Panels must be slid into the channel along the full length of the joiner, which can be challenging on larger roofing projects.
- Limited tolerance for panel size variations.
Excelite Two-Piece Aluminium H Joiner
-
Fast and easy to install.
-
Panels are simply laid onto the base section, and the top cap is fixed over the sheets.
-
Allows greater flexibility if panels are slightly oversized or undersized.
-
Ideal for both Twinwall and Solid Flat polycarbonate roofing sheets.
3. Waterproof Performance
Traditional One-Piece Aluminium H Bar
-
Achieving a watertight seal can be difficult. If the fit is too tight, panels are difficult to slide into place. If the fit is too loose, water penetration may occur.
Excelite Two-Piece Aluminium H Joiner
-
Designed with rubber gaskets to create a secure weatherproof seal. No silicone needed.
-
Can be firmly fixed to the supporting structure without affecting installation.
-
Provides excellent waterproof performance and long-term reliability.
4. Price
Traditional One-Piece Aluminium H Bar
-
Similar material cost to a two-piece system.
Excelite Two-Piece Aluminium H Joiner
-
Comparable in price to traditional one-piece H bars.
-
Offers significantly easier installation, better sealing performance, and greater versatility for virtually the same cost.

Can I install polycarbonate roofing without H joiners?
Yes, polycarbonate roofing can be installed without Aluminium H Joiners, but it depends on the type of roofing system and the level of weatherproofing and appearance you want to achieve.
You can overlap corrugated polycarbonate sheets directly and fix them to the supporting structure without using H Joiners. However, this method is generally limited to corrugated roofing profiles.
For solid polycarbonate sheets, twinwall polycarbonate sheets, and multiwall polycarbonate sheets, Aluminium H Joiners are highly recommended. They provide:
- A neat and professional finish.
- Secure sheet fixing and support.
- Better waterproofing and weather resistance.
- Accommodation for thermal expansion and contraction.
- Improved wind resistance and long-term durability.
Without H Joiners, it can be difficult to create a strong, watertight connection between adjacent sheets. This may increase the risk of leaks, movement, or premature failure, especially in outdoor applications such as pergolas, patios, verandas, and skylights.

General questions of polycarbonate sheeting
Polycarbonate sheeting is extremely strong and nearly unbreakable, making it suitable for applications like police shields, awnings, sunroom roofing, and greenhouses. These panels are resistant to various weather conditions and maintain their appearance for many years.
Polycarbonate sheets can be easily cut using a circular saw or a jigsaw. Circular saws are best for cutting larger lengths, while jigsaws require careful handling to ensure proper cuts.
Please be aware that a suitable blade is required for cutting. We recommend using a 60 teeth fine blade for optimal results.

To minimise yellowing, All Excelite polycarbonate products with UV-resistant coatings or to apply UV protectants.
Polycarbonate sheets require minimal maintenance. Gentle cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft cloth is typically sufficient. Avoid abrasive cleaners, brushes, or pressure washing, as these may damage the UV-resistant coating or scratch the sheets
Selecting the right pergola roofing involves considering factors such as your budget, preferred design, frame style, and color preferences. It's crucial to engage in discussions with a pergola roofing supplier before initiating the construction of your frame.
Polycarbonate Roofing
Although polycarbonate sheets are tough and durable, they should not be walked on. They can withstand many impacts, but might dent or scratch under the weight of a person. Additionally, their surfaces are slippery because it's smooth, posing a risk of slipping and injury.
Polycarbonate Corrugated sheet and twin wall polycarbonate sheets are typically the least expensive varieties. Despite the lower price, these sheets can endure Australia's harsh weather conditions, but selecting the wrong type may lead to more expenses in the long term.
Pergolas & Greenhouses
Excelite's popular glass-look polycarbonate flat roofing is an excellent choice for a pergola roof. It is easy to install, low-maintenance, and watertight, making it a great alternative to glass.
A pergola enclosure with a glass-like appearance, use a 4-6mm thick solid polycarbonate sheet. Alternatively, use twin-wall polycarbonate panels for a more affordable, yet less transparent option.
Twin wall polycarbonate is ideal for greenhouse construction due to its insulating properties and minimal framing requirements. Excelite Corrugated and embossed polycarbonate sheets are another excellent flexible option for greenhouse materials, especially for curved roofing or tunnel greenhouses.
