How to Measure Your Pergola Roof

Measure the distance between each rafter from centre to centre. Because the aluminium H-joiners are installed directly above the rafters, we generally deduct approximately 15mm from each measurement to allow space for the joiners and thermal expansion.

Measure every rafter bay individually, as the spacing may vary slightly.

For the sheet length, measure along the roof slope from the upper fixing point to the gutter. Allow approximately 50mm of additional length to overhang into the gutter.

Please send us your measurements and photos of the existing frame before ordering so we can help confirm the appropriate sheet sizes.

How Do I Join Two Polycarbonate Sheets Together?

Aluminium H Joiner 58mm 2-Parts Polycarbonate Glazing Bar - ExcelitePlas

Use a two-part aluminium H-joiner with rubber seals. Install the base profile directly above the rafter, with the rubber lips facing towards the sheets.

Position one polycarbonate sheet on each side, leaving approximately 3mm of expansion clearance per side. Clip the top cap over the base, then secure it according to the installation instructions.

When installed correctly, the H-joiner creates a strong, clean and weather-resistant connection without requiring screws through the sheets.

Frequently Questions:

  1. Is a slope necessary for my pergola?

Slope is generally needed for any roofing system. A minimum slope of 5 degrees is recommended for effective water drainage. The slope helps with water drainage, this prevents water from accumulating on pergola roofing surface, ensuring longevity and preventing issues such as leaks.

If your pergola is flat, it's advisable to add shims to create slope.

2, What is the maximum span for my rafters without Sagging?

The maximum span for polycarbonate roofing on your rafters depends on the specific type of polycarbonate sheet and its thickness. The best rafter distance for flat polycarbonate roofing sheet is 600mm-800mm.

It's essential to refer to the manufacturer's guidelines or consult with a structural engineer to determine the appropriate maximum span for your project.

Recommend to consultant with pergola roofing sheets supplier first before you put the rafters on.

3,Is it necessary to install gutters and flashing for my pergola?

Yes, it is advisable to include gutters and flashing in your pergola design to manage water drainage effectively.

4, Why Aluminium H Joiner is important ?

Aluminium H-Joiners are essential for pergola roofing because they create waterproof seams between polycarbonate sheets while allowing for thermal expansion. Their rigid yet flexible design prevents leaks, supports the roof structure, and gives a clean finished look—unlike exposed screws or overlapping panels. Paired with Excelite's 2mm-4mm thick sheets, they form a durable, weatherproof system that outperforms traditional corrugated roofing.

5, Why you should avoid drilling Holes in Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets

While drilling is possible, minimizing holes in polycarbonate roofing sheets is ideal for these reasons:

Risk of Cracks & Weak Spots

  • Polycarbonate expands/contracts with temperature changes.
  • Drilled holes create stress points that can lead to cracking over time

Water Leakage

  • Even with sealant, screw holes degrade over time due to UV exposure and thermal movement.
  • Water can seep through, causing rot or mold in underlying structures.

Better Alternatives Exist

  • Aluminum H-Joiners: Provide a waterproof, strong connections.
When Drilling is Necessary:

If you must drill:
Oversize the holes to allow expansion room, Use UV-resistant EPDM washers
Keep holes at least 2x diameter from sheet edges (e.g., 6mm hole = 12mm from edge).
