Introducing Our Latest Project in Mentone, Melbourne: Pergola Roofing with Polycarbonate Flat Sheets
We are thrilled to share our latest project in Mentone, Melbourne, where we transformed a standard pergola into a versatile outdoor space using polycarbonate flat sheets. Our client's goal was to expand their outdoor living area to accommodate furniture and a BBQ setup, and our innovative roofing solution helped achieve exactly that.

Here are some key details about this project:
-
Pergola Rafter Spans: The pergola had rafter spans of 700mm Centre to Centre in width, providing ample support for the polycarbonate flat sheets.
-
Creating a Slope: Since the pergola had no existing slope and there was a water tank and drainage system on the left side, we decided to create a 5 degree slope towards the left to ensure proper water runoff and drainage.
(Another way to create the slope is add timber on the rafters.)
- Gutter or Free Fall: While guttering is not a standard feature on every pergola, it can be included in the design based on the client's preferences

- 100% Waterproof Canopy: Our goal was to ensure that the pergola roof provided complete protection from the elements. By using polycarbonate flat sheets, we were able to create a waterproof canopy that shields the outdoor space from rain and other weather conditions.
The glazing bar is a key component in achieving a reliable, watertight roofing system. A common installation mistake is fixing screws directly through the polycarbonate sheets into the supporting beams. We avoid penetrating the sheets, as screw holes can create weak points and may lead to cracking as the sheets expand and contract with temperature changes.
Our glazing bars feature integrated rubber seals and can accommodate different sheet thicknesses. They are easy to install and provide a secure, long-lasting, and weather-resistant connection.
-
Flashing Against a Brick Wall: To ensure the durability and longevity of the roof, we installed roof flashing along the areas where the polycarbonate sheets met the brick wall. This added layer of protection helps prevent water leaks, damage, and mold growth.
Our choice of polycarbonate flat sheets for this project offered numerous benefits, including:
- Durability: Polycarbonate sheets are highly durable and resistant to impact, making them ideal for outdoor applications.
- Lightweight: Despite their strength, polycarbonate sheets are lightweight, making them easy to install and handle.
- UV Protection: The sheets are coated with UV protection to prevent yellowing and deterioration from prolonged sun exposure.
- Transparency: Polycarbonate sheets allow natural light to pass through while providing protection from UV rays, creating a bright and inviting outdoor space.

Overall, this project in Menton, Melbourne, demonstrates the versatility and effectiveness of using polycarbonate flat sheets for pergola roofing. Whether you're looking to expand your outdoor living area or enhance the functionality of your pergola, polycarbonate roofing offers a practical and stylish solution.
